The 58th Special Operations Wing was started in the summer of 1952 as the 58th Fighter-Bomber Wing and by August was sent off to Taegu Air Base in South Korea. The FBW supported ground troops by flying air strikes on crucial enemy locations such as bridges, airfields, and power plants. It was also able to help bomb military schools in Kumgang County and Kangso in later 1952 to early 1953, for which the wing earned 2 Distinguished Unit Citations. The wing lost 18 pilots through such frequent missions. The 58th was instrumental in forcing along truce talks with North Korea and the UN when, in spring of ‘53, they bombed the Toksan Dam and destroyed an airfield, rice paddies, bridges, and thousands of buildings with the resulting flood. For its actions in multiple campaigns, the wing was awarded a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. In 1969, after the FBW became the Tactical Fighter Training Wing, it spent the next several years training U.S. and Allied forces at Luke AFB, Arizona. In 1991, the wing was sent to Europe during Operation Desert Storm and in the following years continued to teach foreign pilots on the F-15E Strike Eagle. Soon, however, the wing moved to its current home at Kirtland AFB to teach helicopter and pararescue crews in 1994. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, the 58th flew crews to the site of the plane crash in Pennsylvania. They have deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom continue to support U.S. operations overseas.
